Puglia Day 2

Road to Matera Gravel Bike Tour: Day 2

Across Salento Peninsula, down up to “Finis Terrae”

Daily Agenda

We are in Salento peninsula, land of olive trees and vineyards, the “heel” of Italy that divide the southernmost part of the Italian Sea in two parts Adriatic (east) and Ionio (west).
A long ride that will take us from the cliffs of Torre dell Orso to the lighthouse of “Finis Terrae”, the point where the ancient Romans believed the earth ended. On the path, we find the splendid lakes of Alimini, the city of Otranto and through the cliffs of the coast we arrive at “the end of the earth”. A long day in the saddle on little-traveled roads with breathtaking views of the Salento coast.
In the evening we visit Putignano, a historic city in the Trulli area with its beautiful elliptical-shaped historic center. For dinner, we are welcomed by a newly founded trattoria that in a few years has won the trust of gourmets with regional cuisine of substance that tends to enhance the splendid Apulian raw materials with a few interventions. Here too we can appreciate a vast cellar that will accompany us throughout the dinner.
Signature dishes: Burnt wheat orecchiette, turnip tops and cod – Diaphragm, cream of potatoes, and cardoncelli mushrooms.
