Big War Mountains: Giau and Falzarego Passes

Today two Sacred Monsters: Giau and Falzarego, the mountains of the Big War (WW1 1915-1918).   The climb of Giau Pass is surrounded by scented woods. The road climbs steep and once over the tree line the majestic presence of Averau and Nuvolau mountains is your company till the pass. A truly pro cyclist experience. The itinerary take you back to Cadore with a long descent (29 switchbacks). After the Sac Lunch you can keep going and start the climb to Falzarego pass for a full dip in the Dolomitic scenery from the larch forest to the rocks and the spires of the mountain peak.

SUMMARY OF DAY FATIGUES:
Giau Pass (2236 m.a.s.l.) was part of the Giro d’Italia 8 times, first time in 1973   à # 4 climb of the Giro d’Italia. DONE!
Falzarego Pass south side (2109 m.a.s.l.) was part of the Giro d’Italia 19 times, first time in 1940.  à # 5 climb of the Giro d’Italia. DONE!

In the evening dinner in our beloved local restaurant in Val Casies, a gem of a tiny valley hidden in the heart of Dolomites. The great traditional cuisine of Sud-Tirol perfectly executed, ingredients of the highest quality locally harvested in the family’s  Maso are served to the guests. Signature dishes: Head of veal with sour onion– Venison goulash with canederli, red sauerkraut, mushrooms, and forest fruit compote.
